South End, Boston

Hi, friends! On assignment for BU’s lifestyle magazine, my job was to explore the South End, a neighborhood in Boston distinguished as being the oldest urban victorian neighborhood in the country. Some of these buildings no longer serve their original purpose, but it’s so neat that they’re still standing! Welcome to the January/February edition of the Boston Photo Project.

This building used to house the Chickering Piano Factory. It is now home to a piano builders’ guild.

Wrought-iron is one of the features that defines the South End, and is actually a protected sort of trait. Anyone doing exterior remodeling cannot do away with these! They must either maintain or replace the iron so that it replicates the original.
